Chevrolet Volt Spotlight

Putting a little Spark in your driving with Motor Trends Car of the Year!

The new Chevy Volt is "Plug and Play" driving technology. Imagine never using any gasoline at all for your daily commute. Simply plug it in when you get home and you're ready for the next day. The moment you sit in a Volt you'll feel a special connection. The comfort, the ergonomics and the feeling you're in for something special. When it comes to emissions and the high cost of gasoline there's a light at the end of the tunnel. It's the new Chevy Volt now available for test drives by appointment only at Applewood Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC in Mississauga!

When it comes to innovation, the Chevrolet Volt is without equal. To better understand what makes this technology unique, here is a breakdown of how other engines work and why the Volt is different.

GAS VEHICLES
The internal combustion engine (ICE) is the most common type of engine on the road today. It uses high-energy fuel (like gasoline) in a small, enclosed space and ignites it. The energy that is released from this combustion results in an expanding gas. The engine cycles between this combustion, exhaust, intake and compression hundreds of times per minute, and converts the chemical energy of the fuel into mechanical energy to propel the vehicle.

HYBRID VEHICLES
At low speeds, some hybrids can run on electricity, switching over to gas power for high speeds. Typically hybrids do not achieve the same efficiency as electric vehicles, nor do they generally offer the same environmental benefits. Chevy Volt is an electric vehicle with extended range which is expected to produce significantly lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions than today's hybrid vehicles.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES
EVs are propelled by an electric motor powered by rechargeable battery packs. One of the drawbacks of exclusively electric vehicles is that they suffer from range limitations even with advances in battery technology. This means that once the battery is run down, you must stop to plug it in and charge it. As well, the owner can suffer from 'range anxiety', a constant concern about being left stranded. This concern may lead to less than full utilization of the stored energy and less than full utilization of the vehicle.

THE VOLT DIFFERENCE
Chevy Volt provides all the benefits of an Electric Vehicle, energy efficiency, lack of tailpipe emissions and quiet operation but eliminates range anxiety thanks to a small onboard gas generator which provides the electrical power required to keep Volt going for hundreds of kilometres beyond its battery charge. Volt creates its own electricity so you won't have to worry about being stranded.
