Ontario truck shoppers have an unusual decision ahead this year. GMC and Chevrolet are both introducing completely redesigned full-size pickups for 2027, and the two trucks share a lot of new hardware underneath their sheet metal.
The real question isn’t which brand builds the stronger truck. It’s which lineup, Sierra or Silverado, matches how you actually plan to use one. Here’s what sets them apart.
What’s New Across Both Trucks

Both the 2027 Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500 introduce sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines in 5.7L and 6.6L displacements, each paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. GMC calls the 6.6L in Sierra Denali Ultimate the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class, and Chevrolet makes a similar claim for the new V8s across the Silverado lineup.
Both trucks also add a Turbo-Diesel to the engine roster. Chevrolet specifies a segment-exclusive 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel for Silverado, while Sierra offers its own class-exclusive Duramax diesel. Silverado additionally gets an enhanced 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder rated for best-in-class standard torque; Sierra’s TurboMax carries the same torque upgrade.
Cabin technology moves forward on both sides, but not identically. Silverado standardizes a 16.3-inch centre display and a 12.2-inch driver information centre across its entire lineup, including Work Truck. Sierra fits the same 16.3-inch and 12.2-inch pairing to Denali Ultimate, which adds a 15-inch head-up display, the largest offered on either truck.
For a buyer who wants that big-screen tech as low in the lineup as possible, Silverado’s standardization is the deciding factor. For a buyer chasing the largest head-up display on a flagship trim, Sierra’s Denali Ultimate changes the equation.
Both trucks add Super Cruise hands-free driving with trailering capability, so the system keeps working while towing. GMC packages storage and workspace into Sierra’s MultiPro centre console, while Chevrolet builds a similar idea into Silverado’s Multi-Flex console. Exteriors are all-new on both trucks: Silverado adds standard dual exhaust from Custom trim up, and Sierra offers available quad exhaust outlets on select trims.
Both the 2027 Sierra and Silverado are expected at Canadian dealerships before the end of the 2026 calendar year. Full pricing, fuel figures, and towing numbers will follow ahead of each truck’s on-sale date.
Key Buying Factors
- Engine lineup: both trucks offer four engines, new 5.7L and 6.6L V8s, a TurboMax four-cylinder, and a Turbo-Diesel, all matched to a 10-speed automatic.
- Display tech: Silverado’s 16.3-inch touchscreen and 12.2-inch cluster are standard lineup-wide; Sierra’s largest displays, including its 15-inch head-up display, are exclusive to Denali Ultimate.
- Off-road hardware: Sierra AT4X and Silverado ZR2 both run front and rear e-locking differentials on 35-inch mud-terrain tires, though each uses its own Multimatic damper tuning.
- Trim depth: Silverado spreads seven trims across three lifted variants (ZR2, Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss); Sierra runs six trims topped by AT4X and Denali Ultimate.
- Timing: both trucks arrive before the end of 2026, with Canadian pricing and performance ratings to follow closer to launch.
Matching Off-Road Hardware to Your Terrain

If you need a truck built specifically to chase the most demanding trails, the Sierra AT4X works because of its front and rear e-locking differentials, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers tuned for high-speed impacts. A 2-inch suspension lift and a standard panoramic sunroof round out the package.
If you want a similar off-road toolkit with a different personality, the Silverado ZR2 works because it also runs standard front and rear e-lockers and 35-inch mud-terrain tires, riding on Multimatic DSSV dampers proven in desert racing. Its cabin swaps in real forged carbon-fibre trim, a detail unique to ZR2.
Buyers who want off-road styling without the full lift have a step-down option on each side. Silverado’s Trail Boss rides on 34-inch mud-terrain tires with its own 2-inch lift, while Sierra offers the AEV Edition package for owners who want to push AT4X further. Silverado adds a ZR2 Bison Edition with beadlock-capable wheels and extra skid plates for the same purpose.
Everyday Value and Flagship Comfort

If your priority is a durable, well-equipped work truck, Silverado’s Work Truck and Custom trims deliver full-size capability, with dual exhaust and 20-inch wheels on Custom, aimed at fleet use and first-time full-size buyers. Sierra’s Pro trim fills the same role for GMC shoppers who want capability without stepping up the lineup.
If your priority is flagship comfort, the Silverado High Country works because of its standard 22-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, an exclusive Tritan Satin grille, and two distinct interior themes finished in real wood and microfibre suede.
For that same priority on the GMC side, Sierra Denali Ultimate works because of its 16-speaker Bose audio system with head-restraint speakers, forged wood trim, and an articulating passenger display, on top of the standard 6.6L V8.

Sierra or Silverado: Matching the Truck to the Job
The 2027 Sierra and Silverado share the same new V8 engines and 10-speed automatic, but GMC and Chevrolet aim them at different driveways. The Sierra suits a buyer who wants GMC’s off-road-focused AT4X or Denali Ultimate’s flagship cabin technology. The Silverado suits a buyer who wants Chevrolet’s broader seven-trim spread, from work-truck value to High Country comfort, at every point on the lineup.
